It’s Mother’s Day and a great chance to celebrate two amazing women we’ve met since being in Peru on our Tearfund gap year.
Ulga is the pastor of the church we’re attending in Peru and one of the women we get to work closely with.
She is an incredible woman who is a mother figure to so many children and she has the respect of not only the children but also the elder youth in the churches we go to.
We’ve learnt so much from working alongside her. As well as working as a pastor to two churches, which includes four services a week, she also runs a corner/stationary shop to help fund the church.
Her commitment to the church is amazing and that is shown through the way she runs her shop and gives all the profit to the church.
A huge challenge she faces is not only working as a pastor to two churches but also the fact that she is one of the few woman pastors within Cajamarca so it is sometimes hard for her to gain respect from some of the elder men in the community.
However, the way in which Ulga conducts herself has gained the respect of so many, especially our team!
Ulga is the mother to another inspiring woman called Miriam who works for Warmis, Tearfund’s partner in Peru.
Miriam works three days a week for Warmis, working with women in the countryside – helping to empower them, giving them the skills and materials they need to start businesses.
Miriam gives women a chance to begin to provide for themselves and become independent.
It has been so good to work along side Ulga and Miriam and observe how they both lead services and work alongside the community.
I can safely say that they have both become mother figures to the group as well as to so many others!
