Lighting the flame
When I was 10 years old a close family friend was living with us whilst preparing to go overseas on mission. As I witnessed her intensive preparation and planning I heard the stories of God at work in the places she lived in and through the people she was involved with. Hearing these stories started a dream - to go overseas to be a part of God’s work and discover his plan for my life.
During the summer I had the fantastic opportunity to do work experience with Tearfund’s Global Volunteering team. During the week I looked in detail at all the different trips Tearfund offer, especially the gap year adventure. Whilst at Tearfund I was able to speak to lots of different people on the team and hear about their experiences overseas and the projects they have been involved in. You could really feel their enthusiasm for the work they are doing.
Katie, another work experience student, had recently been on a trip with her youth group to Malawi. Together we put together a film to tell others why a youth group trip could be so beneficial…
It was great to hear from someone my own age being so excited about what she had done and so keen to head back.
Seeing this passion in the eyes of others is inspiring me to go on a Gap year trip for myself.
Why would I go on a Gap year trip? There are so many reasons…
My greatest comfort was knowing that my church would be there to support me. One of my friends from church recently had a Gap year in South Africa and it really encouraged me to see just how much the church got involved. It’s important to know that I would have the church’s support and that they would be praying for me whilst I was away.
Another reason for going on a Gap year trip is the opportunity to meet new people, not only the people on team with me, but the people that I will encounter, each with their own individual stories. The length of the trip means that there is time for me to develop my relationships with the team whilst allowing me to mature and learn more about myself.
LIVING AND SPEAKING FOR GOD
Going on a Gap year trip with Tearfund also allows me to be part of God’s plan for poverty, knowing that through the work I will be doing I would be carrying out God’s will to lift people out of poverty.
‘You will not change the world by going overseas with Tearfund. But the world you encounter and the God who meets you there will change you for the rest of your life. And through you, He will change the world.’
David Westlake (Integral Mission Director)
I have no doubt that going on a Gap year trip will give me a life changing experience that will alter the rest of my life.
